Craft it :: Treasure Hunt Puzzle

Nothing keeps a preschooler occupied longer than a good treasure hunt. So for Valentine's Day this year I created a fun - and inexpensive - treasure hunt for my kids. It's easy enough for Pearl but can still keep Lars hunting.

Here's my theory :: I found blank puzzles at the craft store - made them unique for each kid - then broke up the puzzles and hid the pieces. Pearl's pieces are pretty easy to find. Lars' are not. I'm keeping him busy.

This isn't just for kids. For your boyfriend or husband you can write a little love note, break up the pieces and stash them in their briefcase, lunch, car, etc. for them to find throughout the day. Talk about an easy way to say "I love you."

:: You'll need ::
Blank puzzles
paint brushes
water color paints or acrylic paints

Step 1 :: Quickly wash a pale color over the entire puzzle and let dry.
Step 2 :: Sketch the outline of your design on the dry base and paint the lines with black acrylic paint. Let dry
Step 3 :: Fill in design with color. Let dry.
Step 4 :: Break apart puzzle and play!

I adore Funfetti. I like the name, I like the bright colors, I like the mood it sets when you say "funfetti." It makes everyone happy.

So why wouldn't you want to incorporate something that makes everyone happy into your life?

February seems like the perfect time to start bringing MORE color into the house. We talked about (last month) how Pantone decided on orange for the color of the year. Or as they like to call it, Tangerine Tango. I don't agree. We've done orange and I'm over it.

But we haven't done funfetti! I love it and I think you will too. To convince you more, I'll post several projects and recipes that I make for this month in the realm of "February Funfetti!" Stay tuned. For continuous inspiration, check my Pintrest board for regularly updated inspiration.

I'm bringing the spirit of Funfetti into my own home as well. For Christmas this year my sister got us this awesome Pendleton blanket. I love it. I love the bright colors. I love how awesome it will look in my living room (once I get a few things recovered). Most of all I love what it inspired.

I'm in the process of recovering a few pieces of furniture (read :: all of it) and I'm going to use the colors in the blanket for inspiration to bring a little more 'pop' into the living room. Or a little more 'funfetti,' if you will.

Cook it :: Slow Smoky Beef Tacos

I made these last week and they are awesome. We're planning when we can make them again... The secret is the can of El Pato. We call it duck sauce because the English side of the can has a picture of a Mallard Duck. We use it for all kinds of sauces but this may be the best use yet!

Slow Smoky Beef Tacos

1 7.75ounce can El Pato Salsa de Chile Fresco
1/2 cup ketchup
8 whole cloves garlic
1 tablespoon oregano
2 1/2 pounds beef chuck roast
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper

corn tortillas
fresh chopped cilantro
sour cream
salsa
shredded cheese
guacamole

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Fill a heavy cast iron pot with ketchup, El Pato, garlic, oregano, salt and pepper. Stir to combine all ingredients. Chop meat into 8 even sized pieces and place in the pot. Bring to a boil over medium heat rotating pieces of meat to coat completely in sauce.

Cover pot and place in preheated oven. Bake 3 hours.

Remove from oven and shred beef with two forks. Serve along side toppings and warmed tortillas.

Serves 4

I adore stripes. I live in stripes. We recently discovered that Judson only owns clothes with stripes on them. We discovered it while getting him dressed to go out and he was wearing a striped shirt with striped pants. A striped sweatshirt, striped socks, and a fleece. A fleece without stripes. Whew. He got quite a few comments and he's a little young for the 'he dressed himself' excuse.

It's no secret I love stripes but I tend to use them in more moderation in my own wardrobe. I recently clicked onto Kate Spade's site only to discover her pattern for the month of January was stripes!! I am beyond excited. Then at the U Village today I saw tons of shops with stripes in their windows and I am thrilled.

Thrilled for buying some new clothes that will fit my post baby body and thrilled that they will be my favorite pattern of all. I discovered while at Alt that I was seriously out of date in my wardrobe - and that it was pretty much a 'mom wardrobe.' I never thought I'd be that girl, but there I was among fashion bloggers and generously fabulous people and I was in a cardigan and cowboy boots.

Create It :: Felt Valentine Envelopes

I made these envelopes for my kids this year and they are bananas for them! They run around the house with "mail" and send letters to each other. It's adorable. Make them today and let them enjoy them all month - or surprise them by tying them onto a chair at breakfast or dinner on Valentine's Day!

:: You'll need ::
1 envelope template (or butcher paper)
1/4 yard red felt
1/4 yard sparkle fabric
1 yard satin ribbon
Button
1/4 yard white felt

If you don't have an envelope template, they are really simple to make. Here's how ::

1. Measure the back of your chair. You can just hold up the paper and eyeball it. Cut a length of butcher paper the width of your chair back.

2. Fold the length of paper in half and cut a "V" on one end and a reverse "V" on the other end to create an 'arrow' like shape.

3. What it should look like.

Now you're ready to make the fabric version!

Step 1 :: Cut envelope shape out of red felt. (image 4)
Step 2 :: Cut envelope shape out of sparkly fabric (you can omit the 'bottom' of the envelope from the sparkly fabric) (image 5)
Step 3 :: Lay satin ribbon across the back of the red fabric and mark where it should attach to the back to properly tie on to the chair. (image 6)
Step 4 :: Stitch satin ribbon onto red fabric. (image 7)

Step 5 :: Cut a heart out of pink felt and pin to 'point' of envelope (on the same side of the fabric as the ribbon). Top stitch it down. (image 8)
Step 6 :: Flip red fabric over and lay sparkly fabric on the 'inside' - wrong sides together. Pin in place.
Step 7 :: Fold bottom of the 'envelope' up and pin in place. (image 9)
Step 8 :: Top stitch around the exterior of the envelope.

Done! (image 10)

To create the 'mail' I used the alphabet setting on my sewing machine and wrote their names on pieces of white felt. You could also use iron on transfer paper, a permanent marker, or free hand write with your machine to create the same look. Or use real envelopes!

Can you believe I have been home from Alt Summit for one week? Are you tired of hearing about it? If you read almost any other blog out there, then you've no doubt heard the recaps, seen the photos, and heard the raves about Ben from Pintrest.

I'll do my best to refrain from waxing on and on about how great it was (it was great) and I'll focus instead on applying what I learned to making this a great blog and my website a great website. I feel really honored to have been able to go and meet some amazing people. I tend to be a bit competitive. Meeting people who not only want to help me, but want to help my business grow, is really refreshing.

One gal even emailed later to say she was "rooting for me." I'm rooting for her too. I will be posting more on her awesomeness later.

Brainstorming Valentine's Day

Can you believe we are already talking about Valentine's Day? It's just around the corner. This is our first year of having school Valentines to do - and I feel like there is a little bit of pressure. With only thirteen kids in the class, I don't have the excuse of "too many to do." They can all be perfect - technically.

But what to do?? I've been brainstorming ideas that would be clever, useful (no junk), and as little candy as possible. My kids get plenty of candy all year round. They don't need more candy. Really ever. I assume other people feel the same way. I could be wrong.

I found a lot of really great ideas. Now I have so many great ideas that I'm at a standstill trying to choose which one is right.

What are your favorite homemade Valentines? I haven't even gotten to the projects I want to make for my kids! Eek!

Alt Summit :: The highlights

I loved being at Alt. Not only does it make a difference to be around people who 'get' what you do everyday, but they had so much to teach that I could have been there another three days. While I technically learned the most in the workshops and small sessions that I took - I emotionally learned more from the keynote speeches that punctuated each day.

Here are a few highlights that will help your days too. No matter what business you are in, the impressive and (in some cases) adorable speakers have some advice that is worth while.

:: A well designed home makes a difference in how your kids turn out -- Max Gillingham-Ryan from Apartment Therapy

:: The value of the story lies in the storytelling. -- Pilar Guzman from Martha Stewart Living

:: Make yourself happy. Don't chase "happiness" -- Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project

:: Anything worth building was built by a group of people -- Ben Silbermann, creator of Pintrest

:: If you don't ask for it, you don't get it -- Amy Butler

There are so many things that were said by these speakers that resonated with me - and with fellow attendees. The twitter feed during the lunches each day was filled with an insane number of quotes. I came away with the over arching knowledge that no one has mapped out a plan to exactly where they are going and followed it.

And been successful.

The most successful people have stumbled upon what they love to do and have had doors open for them that guided them to where they are. How did the doors open? Mostly with incredibly hard work. When you work really hard on one project - even if it fails - it can still lead to amazing things. Pilar Guzman started Cookie Magazine (one of my favorites) before it closed, Deborah Needleman created the cult favorite Domino Magazine and was at the helm of it when their doors closed too.

It's reassuring to know that the leaders in our field have failed. Not that their failure has defined them or that I take any pleasure in their failure. But that they have failed is reassuring when we are trying something new. It won't always work. But we will learn from it. We will grow from it. And you never know what doors it may open.

Allow those doors to open. You never know what's behind them!

I will be trying a few things new in the coming months. Hopefully they won't fail. But I am jumping into them with both feet because even if they do - I know I will come out ok in the end.

Hello! I am back from Salt Lake and back from Alt Summit. I am feeling refreshed, ready to focus and move forward, and ready to start showing off all of the cool things I learned.

First up, can you believe I took the above photo? Seriously. I took a food photography workshop from House of Brinson and I feel like I am a total pro now. They are not only amazing photographers, but really great teachers. There was a room full of us - some who knew how to use their cameras and some who did not... - and we all ended up with phenomenal images. You will (hopefully) see a big difference in my food photos moving forward. I didn't even use photoshop on this image.

I'll write up more about my time at Alt and some of my top lessons I learned. In the mean time, here are a few of my new friends for you to check out.

Basement Project :: Sliding Door

While I am at Alt Summit, there are still things happening at home and the basement is still moving along. While we were out of town after Christmas, nothing happened. We are moving fast now to try to get this thing done!

Unfortunately, all of the really boring little stuff is what's left before we can move onto wallboard. Boring stuff like soffets.

The bright spot in this period of small changes is the big, enormous, new sliding door that will divide "my" space from the rest of the house. Behind this giant door will be a craft space for me (with laundry too) that I can organize, craft, and create in without having to clean up halfway through projects.

The best part of installing this was the help. Safety goggles, saw, Dora the Explorer underwear, and princess heels.

That's my girl.

Day One at Altitude Summit

My first day, at my first Alt Summit was fantastic. I met a ton of people, drank too much coffee, and have seen many people that are celebrities to me - and would probably only garner a blank stare from the rest of the world.

I am coming back on Sunday and will be recharged, reinvigorated, and filled with ideas to make this blog even better in 2012. I am so excited and hope you will be too.

Just in time for me to leave for Alt Summit, it has snowed.

And Seattle doesn't do snow. Like at all. The news nicknames each storm. And they send reporters out into the snow and ice to report back on the accumulation. Usually this is a big joke because we only get about an inch. This time it's serious.

Mr. Hedin shoveled the walk this morning and it's already covered entirely again.

But I'm heading to the airport anyway. My flight appears to only be delayed and not canceled entirely. Cross your fingers!!

Color of the Month :: Yellow!

So I get that Pantone is the expert on color. But orange? You can call it what you will, but orange is as tired as Mario Batali's crocs. As tired as the handles on Rachael Ray's cookware. As tired as Snooki's tan.

You get the picture. I don't agree that orange is the color of the year.

I love color an find myself strategizing new ways to bring new colors into my house. With bright green floors, my palette for adding more color is limited. But I thought I'd share what I'm thinking for color each month. I'll also be posting boards on Pintrest with my new favorite color.

This month I'm thinking yellow. I've been loving yellow for a while, and now with snow on the ground I'm craving the bright color even more.

In our house I want to incorporate a lot of yellow in the basement. It's not a particularly dark basement, but it's still a basement and it will feel pretty dark once the walls are up, etc.

This photo is my inspiration. I love the colors, the textures, and the elegance of the space. So in the basement I'm painting one wall black. I think. I'm nervous to do it - but it would look pretty cool. Then I'm adding a yellow pattern fabric to the walls around the 'bar' area and a butcher block countertop. It's going to look awesome. And if by some miracle I find upper cabinets that are glass with limited metal framing around them (think like a pharmacy cabinet) the look will be complete. I can't wait to get started on it!

Countdown to Alt

I leave for Alt Summit in just two days and I am completely unprepared! Last year I really wanted to go and couldn't because of a prior obligation. So I marked the calendar almost a year in advance so I could sign up as soon as registration opened. I figured as long as I was signed up, the chaos would have to give way to Alt Summit.

Now that it's upon us, and I am out of distractions, I've realized I'm a little nervous.

1. I don't know anyone.
That's not entirely true. I know Grace Bonney from Design*Sponge. But she's a celebrity at events like this, so I doubt we'll just be hanging out eating dark chocolate.

2. I have no idea what to expect.

3. I'm staying WAY out of town the first two nights because EVERYTHING in Salt Lake proper was booked. Literally, I called everywhere. I can stay in town the last two nights. Weird.

4. I have no idea what to wear for a "Dinner en Blanc" If I was invited to Kanye's All White dinner I'd be buying something new. But his is in the Hamptons in the summer and I have loads of summer white. It's wearing white in the middle of January in Utah that I'm unprepared for.

5. I've never been away from my kids for more than a day or two. This is four nights away! What will I do? What will Mr. Hedin do?

While I'm there I'll update you with photos, etc. Hopefully of me learning lots and being rejuvenated to write more on the blog. And maybe find some new ideas for work in general.

When we were trying to figure out invitations for Lars' birthday party we asked him what he would like. Tiny Prints generously offered to supply the invitations - so we set him free with the website and let him pick anything. He chose a 'jungle' theme invitation that is super bright and colorful. Good choice son.

Picking lots of colors + a pretty generic theme left me able to create what I want/ have time for for the party this weekend. Here is the inspiration I am starting with and I'll share the actual photos on Monday.

My son turns four today.

Four years ago I had my first child and left my steady job (well paid, with adult interaction) for the unruly and unpredictable life of motherhood. I could not have chosen a better route.

Lars is a smart, funny, quick witted, and amazingly perceptive child. He listens to everything everyone says - and remembers it. And can repeat it later at a completely appropriate (and usually embarrassing) time.

He is funny and adorable and totally fun to hang out with. For his birthday I suggested 'sprinkle cupcakes' and he said "that's a really great idea!" I love that kid. It is a really great idea. I think tonight we are ordering pizza - at his request. Except when I mentioned Red Robin he thought I was brilliant. So we'll see what happens. Either pizza and salad or Mud Pie and a burger.

I also made Lars a shirt for his birthday - just like I did a few years ago here. They are really easy. And if you need the recipe for the cupcakes, check it out here. Maybe you'll frost a little better than I did.

It's all the same article, so you can read it once and be set. And now you're thinking, "Valentine's Day?? Already?!" Yes - already. Especially if you are hosting a party. And I highly recommend hosting a party. I'm not a 'lovey- dovey' Valentine kind of gal. I like an excuse for a party, an excuse for fun cocktails, and an excuse to spoil my children. For me, that's what Valentine's Day is about. Plus this year I get to figure out school Valentine's! I'm excited about that. If you're single on V-Day I realize there is a stigma attached. But there shouldn't be and I hope that's what came across in my interview. Have fun, have a party.

Good morning - at least it still is in Hawaii. We're here for just a few more days and then we're back to Seattle and the reality that comes with it. Almost as soon as we land we have Lars' birthday to plan and celebrate, Pearl's birthday to plan, and Mr. Hedin turns 35 in just a few short months. Not to mention I'm hosting a shower for a good friend of mine to celebrate their impending wedding.

Yikes.

In the mean time, I'm soaking up as much sun as I can before we depart. And am gearing up for a crazy few months at home.

While on the Island, we have spent a lot of time at the beach, visited our friend Mickey at the Aulani (huge hit! highly recommended), ate fabulous food, and ate our way through Chinatown. Overall - amazing. Today we rented a stand up paddle board - so we'll see if my abs are in any shape at all.

New Year's Goals

I don't do resolutions - I do goals. It seems more do-able and less stressful. Plus, I've already shared a few of my personal goals. These are work related and I gathered them here so I can reference them later in the year when I am feeling distracted.

To start off on the right foot, I am going to Alt Summit in two weeks where I can network and learn a little about taking better pictures. Hopefully I'll get some tips on the 'earning money' situation - which is bleak at best right now.

I started learning how to delegate last year and I am working on doing more of it in the coming year. It works - and makes me a nicer person. If you have tips - please share them! I can always use the help.

Cook it :: Eggnog Ice Cream

Do you still have Eggnog in the fridge? Are you looking to get rid of it? Or are you still craving a little bit of the holidays and want something lovely and decadent to ring in 2012? I made this just before Christmas and we took it to my in-laws for Christmas Eve dessert - it's really good. And I'm not just saying that. Really good. If you're out of eggnog, go grab some before it's out of stores and make up a batch.

Eggnog Ice Cream
makes 2 pints

2 cups eggnog
1 1/2 cups cream
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
2 tablespoons corn syrup
2 egg yolks
1/4 teaspoon flake salt

In a small bowl whisk together egg yolks and salt and set aside. In a 3 quart saucepan, combine eggnog, cream, sugar, nutmeg, and corn syrup. Bring to a low boil and boil four minutes. When milk mixture has boiled, scoop out 1/4 cup and whisk quickly into egg mixture. Repeat with two more scoops of milk mixture until everything is hot. Pour all remaining milk mixture into eggs and combine.

Place plastic wrap directly on top of the milk mixture and let cool. Refrigerate at least one hour. Pour into ice cream maker and follow manufacturers instructions (should take about 25 minutes).

Serve immediately or freeze and keep up to two weeks.

I love playing with my kids - but sometimes I forget to do it. Work, cooking, and general daily tasks often distract me from the enjoyment of playing with my babies.

Last December I set up two good friends of mine - and now they are engaged! It's the first time I have ever set anyone up - or dared to - and it worked. I am thrilled that they are happy together and thrilled to spend their wedding with them in Palm Springs this spring. Hooray for destination weddings and cheers to the happy couple!

Christmas Wrapping & Welcome New Day Viewers!

I keep typing jokes about rapping vs. wrapping. Can you tell I'm tired? I'm ready for a little break from my Christmas break. But before that - I need to finish getting the gifts wrapped! You too? Here are my ideas for making your presents a little more fun.

:: Fun Tags ::
- Hot glue a vintage light bulb to the top of the package and write the name on using permanent marker
- Forget traditional ribbon and use string! Bakers string is cheap and can be bought in bulk. Plus it has loads of other uses
- Stamp the receivers initials on kraft paper and skip the tag all together

Here's how to make these polymer tags.

:: Tips ::

1. Buy good wrapping paper. Buy a simple color in bulk and use it year 'round

2. Buy good ribbon. Cheap ribbon makes terrible bows. Save and iron to use again the next year - or two years later.

3. Think outside of the box on colors - you don't have to use red and green. Pick a favorite color or something that matches your house and have fun!

4. Make your tags interesting and reusable. I put the year on mine and they become ornaments for the next year.

Craft it :: Everlasting Gift Tags

These are crazy simple - and look really cool - and can turn into ornaments for next year.

You'll need

Polymer clay

Pasta machine or rolling pin

Cookie cutters

Skewer

Oven

Step 1 :: Preheat oven to 275 degrees

Step 2 :: Roll out polymer clay to 1/4"

Step 3 :: Cut out shapes with a cookie cutter and punch a hole into the top of the shape using the flat end of a skewer

Step 4 :: Bake according to package directions - generally 10-15 minutes - and let cool completely.

OPTIONAL :: Scratch the name or initials of the recipient in the tag before baking.

Craft it :: Glitter Santa

I showed you my house all decorated for Christmas - and you had the nicest things to say! Thank you! A lot of the decorations are things I've had for ages, or were passed down from grandparents collections. But some of my 'vintage' things can be made at home. The glittery santa is the simplest.

The best part about this project is that it reuses something that may otherwise be trash. I found the 'base' for my glittery man at Value Village - but I've seen equally repelling statues at thrift stores, yard sales, and grandparents houses. I'm sure you can find one too. The key is to find one with lots of detail and a really distinct shape. Anything sort of mod and stylized won't work very well.

:: You'll need ::
1 seasonal figurine
Spray adhesive
Fine glass glitter
Matte Finish Spray

Step 1 :: Lay out two separate stations of newspaper. Be sure the top layer can be easily lifted.
Step 2 :: Go outside and spray glue to completely cover the figurine. Spray over grass or another substance that won't stay sticky too long
Step 3 :: Over one newspaper station, pour glitter over figurine.
Step 4 :: Place figurine on second newspaper station and pour glitter from the station 1 newspaper over figurine.
Step 5 :: Repeat pouring glitter back and forth until figure is covered completely.
Step 6 :: Spray with matte finish to set the glitter.

The Hedin House at Christmas

Christmas this year feels a little scattered. A lot of that has to do with the fact that our Christmas decorations and other bits are stored in a variety of locations depending on when they were moved out of the house. Some have never even been in the new house. They didn't make it out of storage before we began the remodel.

And so, this year, there are things that are missing. Our traditional advent calendar is in a box. As are our stockings. And our Christmas books. But we've (read :: I've) made the house festive despite the missing items and I dare say it looks fabulous.

For reasons I'm not questioning, Mr. Hedin thought a white tree was as good of an idea as I did. That rarely happens. It may have had something to do with my non-stop chatter about how divine a white or flocked tree would be and he gave in. What ever the case, I love it.

It's the first year my pink flamingo looks good on the tree. It usually looks large and awkward and I always hope for a gaping hole in the tree so it can have a home. I also decorated with glittered pinecones. They were a score from last year - from Walmart of all places! My mom and I found ourselves there on Whidbey Island and the Christmas decorations were all 80% off. I stocked up.

I have only wrapped a small number of packages, but what I have wrapped is in bright colors. Who says Christmas has to be drab? Certainly not me. (See here for further proof)

Yes, those are Tiffany boxes. If you haven't checked out the selection of Tiffany glassware and crystal you are missing out on an affordable luxury that is a FAB gift. No one knows just how reasonable some things are - especially when they are cloaked in a pale blue box.

The bar. And I scored a set of gold rimmed champagne coupes last week that I adore. They are featured in an upcoming 425 Magazine shoot - I can't wait to see the photos!

What a weekend. Wait, it isn't Monday? I don't know what has happened, but the weekend and the entire day yesterday flew by before I knew it. We got a lot done - and Christmas shopping was not one of them.

Today's goal is to get all of the craft supplies needed to start some of the crafts we have planned. There are a few gifts we still have to pick up at the store too - so we'll see if we can cram that in too.

Good morning and happy weekend! Lars is home from school today because they're having parent/teacher conferences so it doesn't feel like a Friday to me. More like a Tuesday.

And I'm getting ready for a photo shoot this Sunday which I am really excited about. We have been decorating (read :: I have been decorating) like a maniac and am so excited to share it with everyone. You too. I'll have a little tour of our house all decorated next week.

I finally finished our Christmas cards too. What's that you say? It's mid-December and I just ordered my cards? Yes. Yes I did. But they are awesome if that counts for anything. And they are postcards so they'll be here really fast. I've found if you order through traditional "Christmas Card" companies they take a week or two. But if you order from regular printers (or through the postcard guys real estate agents use) you can get them faster.

I'll share all of it with you next week. In the mean time, here's what happened here this week - in case you missed it.

:: The basement walls are framed up. And today the painter, the flooring guy and the plumber are all coming over!

Christmas Dinner Party

Last night we had some good friends over for dinner. Because they work and we all have young kids, we don't see each other half enough. This time of year is when it seems to become really apparent. So we had them over for a casual night of catching up.

Calling it a 'dinner party' is probably stretching it a little, because it couldn't have been simpler. And that's how I think entertaining should be. If it's hard, we don't do it. Having people over for dinner and drinks is so much fun, you should do it.

Here's what I did - and it's so easy you can call a friend and do it tonight!

Aged Gouda with Water Crackers and sliced Pears

Chicken Pot Pie

Arugula Salad

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Beer Ice Cream

Red Wine

It doesn't get easier. The cheese is an awesome cheese from Metropolitan Market that I'm a little obsessed with right now + pears are so good. Since we all have kids, they devoured the pears and crackers. The Chicken Pot Pie recipe is here. Arugula Salad is arugula (obviously) + tomatoes + olive oil + lemon juice. Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe is here - make the dough ahead, scoop it and freeze it. Pull out and defrost 10 minutes before cooking 10 minutes. The Beer Ice Cream was a little bit of a joke - but turned out pretty good. I'm trying it again with a stronger beer.

Host your friends tonight - if it's easy and fun, you'll do it more often. And the point isn't to impress your friends with how fancy of food you can make, but to actually hang out with your friends.

Basement Update :: Framing the walls

Is this exciting to you? It's exciting to me! The framing is up and we can now see the rooms as they will be. No longer just lines on a piece of paper and chalk marks on the floor, we now have walls.

I am knee deep in finish plans and calling up all my favorite people to work with to get this space finished. Mr. Hedin still has to get the electrician, plumber, and wall board guys in here - but until then I have visions of tile and paint chips dancing in my head.

Good morning! How was your weekend? We saw Santa!! You have to say that a little like Oprah because Lars could not have been more excited. And it's not even like we got pictures taken. We saw him in a parade. On Whidbey Island. A parade that also included a person dressed up as a bowling pin and the preschool co-op kids. The excitement was palatable - for him...

I can't wait until we actually take him to see Santa and get a picture taken. That will put him over the top. He's a little nervous about Santa asking him too many questions (re: behavior) but he's got a list of questions for him, including 'can I come see the North Pole.' Should be interesting.

I'm getting geared up to post a series of gift guides + the update for our basement! At long last! In the mean time...

I don't know where this week went. Literally, it is already over, already December, already Christmas and I am so not ready for that. Luckily, it's the nature of my job to be a little forced into the holiday season as I get requests for seasonal topics and have to get focused.

While I attempt to get focused, post my children's table ideas from New Day, and update you on our basement (it's warm! it's framed out! it's awesome!) here is what happened this week on the blog.

Usually when I get a new cookbook I dive right in and find something I want to make. It doesn't mean I always follow the recipe to the letter, but I am almost always inspired by what I read and start cooking. Which is maybe why I haven't written about my latest, Momofuku Milk Bar, yet.

I'm thrown off.

Momofuku - the restaurant - is a unique place to eat. So is the Milk Bar. The food is amazing and interesting. The signature of Momofuku Milk Bar is Cereal Milk (TM). It's exactly what you think it is. Cereal soaked in milk to take on the 'bottom of the bowl' flavor. I'm totally trying this with ice cream. I just haven't gotten up the nerve.

Yep, I'm thrown off.

The more I read this book (I read cookbooks cover to cover before I start anything) the more I just wanted to hop on a plane and go to NYC. I want to eat her food. I want to see the bakeries. I want to read this book again. But I don't particularly want to make anything from the book.

If you have every cookbook ever, this is the book for you. It's different. It challenges traditional thinking. It's really interesting. And it's really well written. The author, Christina Tosi, has a great personality that comes through in the writing. She takes her work seriously, but not too seriously that she lacks any sense of humor. The opposite really - her work is imbued with humor, fun, and nostalgia.

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. We did - we're back from Palm Springs and settling nicely into a house that's heated!! While we were gone Greenwood Heating finished installing the boiler system, etc. and we are now toasty warm. It's so fabulous to start to see the basement coming together. Tomorrow I'll share some updates of the project - and this week I get to start getting bids on flooring, painting, and finish work. So exciting. At least for me...

Craft it :: Beyond Easy Candle Holders

Truly - the most simple candle holder ever. Mostly because Mr. Hedin does the actual work. But even then, it's not really work. And because they are dirt cheap and easy you can make them for any reason - and paint them any color. Adding more colors of spray paint actually helps them as they age and gain a nice thick coat of paint.

You'll need
2x4 pieces of wood cut into 3.75 inch lengths
Drill + 1 inch drill bit
Metal tape
Hammer
Nails
Spray Paint

Step 1 :: Drill a hole in the center of each 2x4 square of wood being careful not to go all the way through.
Step 2 :: Spray paint wood covering entirely.
Step 3 :: Wrap around the wood with metal tape.
Step 4 :: Hammer a nail into the end of the tape to secure.

(this is before I fancied them up - the candlesticks too)

Craft it :: Sparkly Candles

I love the idea of glittery candles - but I didn't want to run out to the store to find one. Plus it seemed a waste because I had a cabinet full of plain white candles from Ikea. So I decided to make my own.

Glittery Candles

You'll need ::
Plain candles
Blue tape
Spray Glue
Glitter

Step 1 :: Wrap the top and bottom of each candle with blue tape.
Step 2 :: Spray candles with spray glue.
Step 3 :: Roll candle in glitter.
Step 4 :: Unwrap tape and place candle in candle holder.
Step 5 :: Light candle

Craft it :: Pilgrim Buckle Napkin Rings

Napkin rings for a crowd can be draining if you don't happen to collect matching silver napkin rings as a hobby. And since most of us don't, then figuring out what do do at Thanksgiving is a trick. You can always stick the napkin under the fork - hiding it a bit and disguising the fact that there was nothing else going on with it. Or you can attempt to fold it in a fancy design. Maybe the shape of the Mayflower? But if you don't starch your napkins really well when ironing then they come out looking mostly like Plymouth Rock.

This year I figured out a way to create a little nod to the holiday in napkin ring form. It's a subtle buckle reminiscent of the stereotypical buckles the pilgrims wore on their shoes. Plus it's inexpensive - so you can fill the whole table with pilgrim buckles.

Pilgrim Buckle Napkin Ring (for each 'ring')
1 buckle
1/4 yard double faced satin ribbon

Step 1 :: Loop one end of the ribbon through the buckle and hold tight.
Step 2 :: Loop the second end of the ribbon around the napkin and back through the buckle. Pull tight.

Good morning. Err, afternoon. This week went really fast and this day has seemed to go even faster! We're off to the land of sunshine for a Thanksgiving week filled with modern houses, Mexican food, and a lot of poolside time.

Did you guess that we are off to Palm Springs?

Cook it :: Cranberry Relish in a Can

You know those cans of cranberry relish that are so delicious but so weird? It's weird that it comes from a can. It's weird that it comes out with those little ridges on it. It's weird that it's a universal icon of Thanksgiving. But I think it's really tasty too. A little fake, but still tasty.

This year I decided to try and make my own. It's pretty good, if I say so myself. And really simple. The best part may be that it's make ahead - mandatory make ahead! I prefer this made the day before, but you could make it up to three days ahead. But no more than that - jello gets watery over time and so will this!

Cranberry Relish in a Can
4 cups cranberry juice
4 envelopes gelatin
1 cup fresh cranberries
1 tablespoon orange zest
1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
2 tablespoons sugar

Pour one cup of juice in a heat proof bowl and sprinkle gelatin over top. Set aside.

Put the remaining ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil five minutes until the cranberries begin to pop. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes. Pour hot cranberry mixture over gelatin mixture whisking constantly until gelatin has dissolved completely.

Divide mixture between two very clean 15 ounce cans. Refrigerate until set - at least four hours.

Getting Beautiful :: Intraceuticals Facial

I was lucky enough to get a facial from the Intraceuticals team two weeks ago. I haven' thad a facial in ages - since I had babies and stopped having "extra" money. So this was a treat.

The concept is that it's not a traditional facial where they 'extract' (read pick your face), cleanse, etc. But this facial uses a patented machine that uses oxygen to push vitamins and acids into your pores to create a smoother skin surface and a youthful appearance.

They warn you ahead of time that one treatment isn't going to provide a complete turnaround. But they sent me home with a series of products designed to compliment the regime at home. I was skeptical. I still am, quite frankly.

But I have been shocked at the compliments I have received in the last week on my skin and how refreshed I look. In case I need to remind you, I have three children. Who have decided not to sleep in their own beds recently. Who test my patience regularly. Who cause me to not sleep more than four to five hours a night.

And I have had more people tell my that I look really well rested. I'm not well rested. Not even kind of.

Maybe this stuff really does work.

Their spokesperson, Gina Brooks, swears by it. She uses the treatment as a way to prep the skin of celebrities she works with - like J.Lo, Madonna, and the case of many TV shows - like the Mentalist. I got to meet her and chat about the products. She's lovely - and a mother herself so she understands the stress your skin deals with on a regular basis.

I wanted a picture with her, but should have remembered that I had no make up on. None. Not even mascara. Really bad move. Oh well.

I'll be back for another facial soon because they are available at Nordstrom Spa locations - including my favorite spa downtown. You can get the facial and pick up the products there. I got the 'rejuvinate' facial but they have a variety of options including 'clarity' which helps with acne. Try it for yourself. Especially if you have a big event coming up. Make-up really does go on better.

A Shiny, Cozy Thanksgiving

Are you getting ready for Thanksgiving? If you are looking for a few new things to do this season, why not think outside of the box and create a table with shimmery metallic colors? Every image I looked at online is super rustic and hokey. I didn't like it. I was hoping for some inspiration.

Instead I turned to my spray paint cupboard and saw the silver sitting there looking lonely. So I sprayed the pumpkins and gourds left over from Halloween. Then I sprayed the wheat gold and searched for something equally shiny to wrap it with. Copper pipe fittings from the basement project worked perfectly. Plus they are cheap enough that they are worth a trip to your neighborhood hardware store.

I already have gold rimmed china - and basic silverware. I placed them on a wooden tray to add another layer of texture and acts as a placemat.

I really wanted my candlesticks too. But almost everything I like seems to be in boxes because of the move/remodel. Instead we made some with a block of wood. A scrap of a 2 x 4 with a hole drilled in the top makes a really cheap candlestick that you can spray paint any color at all. Obviously, I chose silver.

This is a really simple way to make a Thanksgiving table out of nothing. Hope this gives you some ideas for your own celebration.

How was your weekend? We have had a great few days - starting with our concrete pour on Friday! The floor is poured, it looks awesome, and we are getting the boiler hooked up today. It's really exciting to see the progress and know that we are getting really close to being able to start decorating. Obviously, Mr. Hedin thinks we have a long way to go until then, but I sure don't! I'm ready!

The above photos may not look exciting to you - but you can see the tubing in the floor that will very soon be pumping hot water! Yes - hot water! We will have warm floors in the basement. I think it's critical to have warm floors in the basement - especially since my boys will have a bedroom down there. Nothing is worse than super cold floors when you sit on the floor or step out of bed in the morning. Heated floors also add a really nice quality of heat. It's not blowing air but just a warmth that surrounds the room. Maybe I should get a job at the floor heat place. I'm a huge fan.

I'll start sharing with you some of my ideas and the direction we are taking with the decor. I know exactly what I want to do! Get excited!

Jealous? You wish you had a porta-potty in front of your house too. Today they are pouring the new basement floor and we'll have workers in and out of our house now for the next few weeks as we start hooking up the new heat, hot water heater, and run new electrical. It's an exciting month as we try to push to be done in late December/ early January. (did you hear that? we are fudging a little on our Christmas deadline...)

House Project :: Basement Insulation

The future laundry room

Thinking about this post, I thought it was probably the most boring post I'd ever posted. But around here, it's pretty exciting. The basement floor has been covered with insulation so when the radiant floor heat goes in we aren't heating the ground below - at least as much. Mr. Hedin has laid down all of the insulation and has started framing up where the walls will be. We are getting to see what the new layout will look like when we are finished! Hooray!

The bad news about all of this is that we are missing two very critical items :: a furnace and a hot water heater. It's times like these that we are glad my parents live so close. The great thing about taking those items out completely is that we are getting completely new duct work and completely new plumbing (eventually).

Craft it :: Golden Wheat

Continuing the theme of our glam Thanksgiving, today is more of the centerpiece - a take on the traditional shafts of wheat :: Golden Wheat. At the end of the week I'll show you how it all comes together into one table setting!

These are really easy too and are basically everlasting, which means you can do it today and be done for Thanksgiving.

:: You'll need ::
Bunch of dried wheat (available at the craft store)
Copper pipe fitting (1/2 inch works best)
Gold spray paint

Step 1 :: Unwrap wheat, lay out flat on a drop cloth, and spray paint gold. Let dry.
Step 2 :: Gather wheat in your hand into a bunch the same size as the copper pipe fitting. Thread copper pipe fitting over the bottom of the wheat and pull up to just under the wheat cluster.
Step 3 :: Trim wheat to 5 inches below the base of the copper pipe fitting.
Step 4 :: Stand wheat up straight on it's end - all lengths of wheat need to be the exact same length to work correctly.

Craft it :: Handprint Turkeys

I'm into a glam Thanksgiving this year. Mostly because everywhere I look for Thanksgiving ideas it's all kinds of homey/ rustic/ rough around the edges. Why? There is no reason why you have to be thankful for what you have in a country setting. I decided to glam up Thanksgiving this year with a little spray paint. The first craft is turning gourds (left over from Halloween at our house) into Thanksgiving Turkeys. Really really easy. You just have to have access to children's hands.

:: You'll need ::

Children's hands
Gourds with turned 'necks'
Silver spray paint
Colored card stock
Hammer + nails

Step 1 :: Trace child's hand print onto card stock and cut out several hand prints.
Step 2 :: Spray paint gourd completely and let dry.
Step 3 :: Poke a nail through the base of the handprints.
Step 4 :: Pound nail into the blossom end of the gourd.

** If you are tracing the handprints of your own children, be sure to write their name on the bottom and the date. Save for next year and compare.

Good morning! How was your weekend? Our days and nights are flying by as we attempt to spend quality time with our children, work, and get the basement remodeled. But isn't that part of the fun of life? Some one also forgot to tell my children that daylight savings time means we get to sleep an extra hour.

This weekend I got to emcee an event for Roosevelt High School - my alma matter - and raise money for the drama program. As a graduate of the program, I believe strongly in supporting it. And as funds continue to be cut from the arts in public schools, private funding becomes more and more important to make sure the next generation continues to create beautiful things.

Today I'll be posting some beautiful things I have created for Thanksgiving, but in the mean time, check out what's happening elsewhere today

Good morning! I am on the news this afternoon with a few ideas for creating a fun Thanksgiving - a little traditional and a little not. Tune in to the KOMO 4 News at 4pm and check it out!

In other news (get it - the segue was 'news') last night was a huge event at Molbaks that I got to be a part of! The Holiday Sneak Peek Event was announced only to members via email - but was open to everyone - and offered 20% off almost everything in the store! There were door prizes, cider, and more Christmas ornaments and decor that you have ever seen in your life. At least more than I had seen outside of my my mother's basement.

Cook it :: Cinnamon Toast Crunch Muffins

My kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. I know, mother of the year, but they are picky eaters and a little cereal never hurt anyone. Especially when breakfast seems to be a struggle most mornings - it's also why I came up with these muffins. Inspired by the cereal, I made a sour cream based muffin topped with a little crunchy streusel. These have been a hit. It's a perfect recipe to make this weekend for breakfast.

Cinnamon ToastCrunch Muffins

Makes one dozen

1/2cup melted butter

2eggs

1/2cups sugar

1/2cup brown sugar

1 tspvanilla

1 1/2cups flour

1 1/2teaspoons baking powder

1/2teaspoon salt

1 1/2teaspoons cinnamon

1/2cup sour cream

Streusel Topping

2tablespoons flour

1/3cup brown sugar

1/3cup sugar

½ teaspooncinnamon

3tablespoons butter, room temperature

Preheatoven to 350. Blend together melted butter, eggs, sugar and vanilla. In aseparate bowl combine flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. Pour dryingredients into butter mixture blending until just combined. Add sour creamand combine with as few strokes as possible. Pour batter into muffin tins.

In asmall bowl combine together streusel topping ingredients with a fork or yourfingers. Top each muffin with a smallhandful of topping to equally divide the mixture.

Bake forthirty minutes until toothpick comes out clean. Remove from oven and let sitfor a few minutes before serving.

Cooking class at The Pantry at Delancey

For my birthday this year my sister gave me a cooking class at The Pantry at Delancey - we went last week and had so much fun.

The class was Belgian Bistro and the chef, Olaiya Land, prepared an amazing feast (with our help, of course) of Steak Tartare, French Fries with Homemade Mayonnaise, Braised Rabbit, and true Belgian Waffles made in an authentic waffle maker from Belgium (it was even hand carried over by a friend).

With each course we sampled beers - many sourced from obscure beer shops - authentic to Belgium and - quite frankly - too 'authentic' for my taste. But it was really interesting to try the beers and see how the flavor changed when paired with food. I think it's fascinating to see how different cultures and communities enjoy different beers. These were definitely not Budweisers.

We began with a traditional Belgian treat of goat cheese spread on a piece of hearty bread and topped with Sirop de Liege. Sirop de Liege is a sweet, sticky spread that tastes of dates - it's evidently unavailable in the US but my sister found it online here. Olaiya had her friend (the same waffle maker friend) bring her back a tub. With goat cheese it's a lovely appetizer - but I can also imagine it on toast in the morning or over homemade vanilla ice cream.

From there we hand chopped steak, capers, shallots, and parsley for our steak tartare. Paired with another unusual Belgian beer. The tartare was amazing. I love tartare however, so I don't know how someone who doesn't enjoy raw meat would feel about it.

Then the rabbit! Rabbit is a dark meat that benefits dramatically from a marinade and a slow cook. Olaiya had marinated the meat overnight and had even cooked a batch an hour an a half longer than the recipe called for because her rabbits were larger than the recipe called for - thus tougher.

It was divine. A little flour dredge on the rabbit as it came out of the marinade, into a hot pan to brown, and then reunited with the marinade to boil and bubble for the remainder of the class. Olaiya served it over egg noodles but you could choose rice or regular old pasta noodles.

If you have never had a Belgian Waffle, like in Belgium, then you have never had a really good waffle. These are a yeasted waffle that rises twice - one of those being overnight. These are not Tuesday morning waffles (unless you are a super planner). But there's another reason you probably won't be whipping these up tomorrow and it's called Pearl Sugar.

Not Pearl Sugar you get from Ikea that's in tiny little balls that are really good on top of Gingersnap Cookies. This sugar is large crystals of sugar that melt in your mouth. I am the owner of just such sugar because it's available for sale at The Pantry. Get your buns down there for a class and you can get some too.

Large balls of dough with the consistency of cookie dough went into this giant, archaic seeming waffle iron. A true authentic Belgian waffle maker made of cast iron and hand carried to the States.

And when they came out, they were golden brown with large chunks of sugar remaining on the inside. The sugar from the outside crystalized and coated the exterior of the waffle making a sweet, crunchy bite. I could be addicted to these waffles.

I came home and looked for another class I could take. Mr. Hedin would dig a few of the classes too. Sadly, they were full up. At least date night classes were full. But maybe another one with my sister?

The issue that just came out this week is the November/ December issue that contains my Swedish Family Christmas Breakfast! This could be my all time favorite article (I say that a few times a year). My children look adorable (if I say so myself), we used the old church cookbook for the pancake recipe - the same recipe Mr. Hedin's family has used for years, and we were at the home of an old friend which had amazing light and an amazing view!

Since the magazine only uses a handful of the images I thought I'd share a few more of my favorites with you. And I'll be sharing the crafts and recipe that weren't included in the magazine - space is tight!

How was your Halloween? We spent the day getting ready for the night, making chili, s'mores bars, gingersnap cookies, and swiffering up the dog hair. It was the first 'party' at our new house - and as fun as it was - I think it was the shortest party in history!

In the old days, our parties would start at 7 or 8 and we would be exhausted and falling into bed when the last person left. Oh how times have changed. Now we all have kids - kids who have 7:30 bedtimes. We jammed a lot of party into just a few hours. We could have probably trick-or-treated a little longer - but there is a lot of candy in our house regardless. We handed out nearly eight bags of candy as well! Eight Costco sized bags.

Halloween :: Eyeball Jello Shots

Halloween is for the kids. At least it is around here. So while the grown-ups are busy being all grown up, I like to inject a few surprises. Like jello shots.

I can think of very few things that are as nostalgic as jello shots - at least they make me a little nostalgic for our college days when we didn't have kids, 8:30 bedtimes, and mortgages. Even if you don't have all the markings of a grown-up, these jello shots are perfect for Halloween.

Eyeball Jello Shots
makes about one dozen

3 ounces lemon jello
6 ounces boiling water
6 ounces citrus vodka (like Absolut Citron)
lychee fruit
maraschino cherries

Pour jello in a large measuring cup (one that can hold 12 ounces or more). Add boiling water and stir until jello is dissolved. When jello mixture has cooled slightly add vodka and stir to combine. Set aside.

Slice lychee fruit and maraschino cherries into rounds. Place one round of lychee in the bottom of a disposable 2 ounce cup and place a slice of maraschino cherry in the center. Repeat filling 12-15 cups.

Place all 'eyeball cups' on a cookie sheet that will fit in the refrigerator. Very gently pour the jello mixture over the eyeballs. Fill the cup to about 1/2 inch below the rim. When done filling cups, place the cookie sheet in the refrigerator and let set overnight.

**Important Common Sense Warning**

Be sure to mark that these contain alcohol! Do not serve them to the kids! Keep them out of reach of children! If the kids want jello too - make jello jigglers in Halloween shapes that are in completely different colors and are not in cups. Please be safe!!

Good morning! Are you frantically trying to get the last of your costumes together? I am. Lars still need his ears made - and so does Pearl. I ended up buying Jud's costume which relieved a huge amount of pressure. Their costumes, as they are now, are pretty cute. Hopefully they still seem cute to me on Monday!!

This week was a crazy busy week

:: I figured out how to turn S'mores into a cookie bar. Delicious and dangerous. And perfect for Halloween

:: The Splendid event last week was great fun! And so is the shop. I've been living in their clothes since the event because they are so soft and cozy.

:: Last night my sister took me to a cooking class at The Pantry at Delancy and it was SO MUCH FUN! We ate amazing food and had a lot of fun. I took pictures, I'll share them later today.

:: Today I'm off to a photo shoot for 425 Magazine. Our house is full of crafts and fresh flowers right now.

Apple Picking & Grape Harvest

Yesterday we decided to drive to Eastern Washington to pick some apples for our apple press. The three hour (plus Starbucks stops) drive was totally worth it to spend a few hours with our friend Matt, eat apples straight off the tree, eat real Mexican food, and even bring home a few grapes!

I love taking my kids to the farm - or where ever the food is actually grown - so they understand that food has to grow. That it comes from somewhere, not just from the grocery store. Or from an Amazon Fresh box! Plus we get to have fresh apple juice now.

We're also going to try making some grape juice with chardonnay and cabernet franc grapes. I want to make them separately so we can have 'cab franc juice' and 'chardonnay juice.' It seems like it would make a good mixer. We'll see how that works out.

It's always so fun to go over and see Matt. We learn so much from him while we are there. It's amazing to see what kind of apples are considered 'unacceptable' to sell. Because we were picking in an organic field, it's natural to see tiny worm holes. But they can't pick those for sale because consumers won't buy anything with a mark - of any kind really. And size is an issue too. Pearl loved finding the tiny 'Pearl' apples for herself. All the better for us, because tiny worm holes and small apples are perfect for making juice out of.

I think we ate our weight in apples while we were standing in the field. The only thing better than eating apples straight out of the field is the smell of fresh picked apples that flooded the car the entire way home.

This last weekend I helped host an event at Bellevue Square to celebrate the grand opening of Splendid! I'm sure you've seen Splendid clothes around - they are for sale at Nordstrom and Anthropologie. Everything is made with really soft fabrics, mostly cotton jersey, and comes in mens, womens, and kids! Kids! The kids clothes are really really adorable.

The event was a lot of fun - and if you have a chance to go to a Crafting Community event, you totally should. On Saturday we made buttons (above), potted succulents in jersey wrapped pots, and wove necklaces with strips of jersey and beads.

Plus, there was a "scarf making" station where you could choose four fabrics to be sewn together into a scarf! Custom scarfs with cute fabric! We chose the fabric, stapled them to an order form, and sent them off to Splendid (with a little money...) and in 2-3 weeks we will be able to pick them up at Bellevue Square. I may have gotten a few more than necessary.

I'm on New Day Northwest this morning! Tune in at 11am on KING 5 to catch my ideas for a fun Halloween party. We're hosting a party this year (if you're around, stop by) and we're so excited to finally have trick-or-treaters! Our old house got literally nobody. We left a basket of candy out last year and not one piece was missing when we got home.

I love the neighborhood camaraderie of Halloween. I love seeing the kids having fun in their costumes. And - only this one night - I love that Lars is allergic to nuts. Mr. Hedin and I get to eat Snickers and Reeces and Almond Joy bars and anything else that 'may' contain nuts. But I digress...

Here's what we're doing at our party. I hope you have a few people over too. It's not about making everything perfect, but having fun. A really great time is always perfect.

:: A big pot of chili - it's easy, inexpensive, and can accommodate people coming in and out. Keep a stack of bowls beside the stove so guests can help themselves.

Cook it :: S'mores Bars

These are addictive. And delicious. And I shouldn't know how to make them. But they are perfect for Halloween or really for anything at all. I'm making them for our Halloween party next week and I really think you should too!

S'mores Bars
12 ounces milk chocolate, roughly chopped
1 package graham crackers
1 recipe marshmallow
butter

Lightly grease the bottom and sides of a 9x13 pan with the butter. Cut a piece of parchment to line the bottom of the pan and to hang over two of the sides. Press parchment into the buttered bottom and set aside.

In a small pan, bring two inches of water to a low boil. Place a glass bowl over the top of the pan and fill with the chocolate. Melt the chocolate, stirring often, over the hot water. If the water begins to boil too hard, turn down the heat and continue.

Pour melted chocolate into the bottom of the prepared pan. Press the graham crackers into the chocolate so they completely cover the bottom of the pan. Cut crackers with a serrated knife if needed. Set aside.

Make marshmallows and pour into the pan. Using a buttered offset spatula, spread marshmallow to completely cover the graham crackers.

Let sit at room temperature - undisturbed - for 24 hours. Cut into 2x2 squares and roll sides in powdered sugar. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days.

Can you believe it's already Friday? This week went really fast for me. And it has been a very thoughtful few days as I am still processing my time with Diane Von Furstenberg. I was so inspired by her, her graciousness, and her career.

I have met a lot of people, over the last few years, who have reason to be pretentious or aloof with the media. And I've begun to expect it from them. Meeting DVF was like being in the room with friends. She was proud of her favorite designs (a purse that has a zip back to reveal your iPad), amazed by her success (the continued popularity of the wrap dress surprises her still - genuinely), and annoyed with the lack of cell coverage in Bellevue (ahem.).

Her tag line "Be the woman you want to be" had me thinking the whole way home. And, quite frankly, still has me thinking. Who do I want to be? For a while I wanted to be Mrs. Harry Beasley when I grew up. She goes to the Hedin family church and is a positive delight. Over the years I have added to or changed who I want to be when I grow up. And on Wednesday night I decided I want to be Diane Von Furstenberg when I grow up. If I could be as gracious, welcoming, and confident as she is I would be thrilled. Who do you want to be when you grow up?

While we ponder that, here's what else happened on the blog this week.

Five minutes with... Diane Von Furstenberg

Can you believe it? Last night I was in the presence of greatness. I got to meet Ms. Diane Von Furstenberg.

There are a handful of people that I have wanted to be like when I grow up - Ms. Von Furstenberg is one of those people. She was gracious and genuine - truly very comfortable, not only in her own skin, but in general. I found myself flustered for words a little bit when she said "well, you don't want to be me." And I thought, "Yes. Yes, I do."

The tagline for the fragrance is "Be the woman you want to be." Diane says that, growing up, she didn't know what she wanted to be, but she knew who she wanted to be. So she spent her effort becoming that woman and discovered what she wanted to do along the way. I think the woman I want to be could be Ms. Von Furstenberg.

My five minutes with her weren't really five minutes. As she is - obviously - incredibly popular and busy, I only asked one question. Lauren (seen above) asked lots of really good questions with answers that will appear in 425 Magazine soon.

What is Saturday Night Chicken?
Saturday Night Chicken is my chicken. What I do is put a lot of sage and a lot of mustard inside the chicken and I cook it very hot and it's very good.

Cook it :: Spider Pancakes

This morning is chaos at our house. The electrician is here running the new wires for the basement. The plumber is coming back after being here all day yesterday. And we need to find somewhere to go. There's no power in the kitchen and we can't use running water this afternoon. Trauma.

So we needed a good breakfast to get us through the morning. In keeping with the Halloween theme I made Spider pancakes. They are easy, so you can make them too.

Spider Pancakes

2 cups flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup pumpkin puree
2 egg
3 cups milk
brown food coloring

Mix all ingredients together - leaving aside 1 cup milk and the food coloring. Remove 1/4 cup batter and place in a squeeze bottle. Drop in brown food coloring and stir until the color of chocolate is achieved.

Add milk to remaining pancake batter and whisk until combined. Place 1/2 cup batter on a hot griddle pan. Squeeze brown pancake batter onto the top of the pancake to create a spider shape. Cook over medium heat until bubbles begin to form on the top of the pancake. Flip and cook another two minutes - or until done.

** We made bats too. You could also spell out a name, if it's short.

Kitchen Envy :: Mid-Century Kitchens

For how much I am inspired by the clean look of the "mid century" style - the kitchen provides a much less literal inspiration. Kitchens in the 1950's were also a reaction to clean efficiency with built in appliances and matching cabinets. They were still, however, tucked into the corner of the house away from the 'living' spaces.

When I tell people that we want to bring the house back to the era it was built in (and probably really cool in) they start talking about these kinds of kitchens. It doesn't work for me. I'm not actually trying to live in the 1950's - just revel in the good parts of the design from the 1950's. Since I spend my entire day in the kitchen, it needs to be a good one. And because my family (extended) seems to all gather in the kitchen, it needs to be a big one.

Do you like how the above Formica ad starts with "there is a definite trend toward making mother a member of the family again."

I've been looking at loads of "mid-century" ideas and it seems like so many people abandon the basic principals behind the kitchens of the 50's and just install a modern space. Which raises the question - how do you create a 1950's kitchen that isn't a 1950's kitchen?

Twin Palms, Frank Sinatra's house in Palm Springs, has done an amazing job of renovating the kitchen to make it chef worthy while keeping with the original style. Starting with St. Charles steel cabinets seems to help.

And we still have to find a way to integrate into the rest of the house... This is part of why I love remodeling. The challenges are everywhere and it's so fun to search for a solution. Stay tuned! The basement is coming along swimmingly and the upstairs remodel is only a little ways off!

Apple Cider Making Adventure

When I was a little girl my sister and I used to make apple cider with our grandparents. We loved making cider with them and we both have really fond memories of the old wooden cider press and the phenomenal cider it produced.

We haven't made cider for years. But when we found out the cider press was actually our uncle's - and that my cousin wanted it - we were crushed. So we went online and found an exact replica of the old wooden cider press then went to the market to find crates of 'juicing' apples (mostly Gala).

This weekend we hauled the press out on the deck and started juicing apples.

And it was good.

We pasteurized several gallons so they keep a little longer and left some "fresh." My sister knows someone who has a still... just saying...

I'm going to try to make Apple Cider Ice Cream. And I'll have some at our Halloween party. What else should we try? Apple Cider Vinegar? Thoughts?

How was your weekend? Ours was packed. Another Husky win - hooray! We're going to start getting used to having a winning team. It's like when I was actually going to the UW and we seemed to win every game (we did one season). But we haven't known a season like this in years. Years.

And then off to Whidbey for some family time - and a little apple cider making adventure. (More on that later)

I also managed to make Jeni's Salted Caramel Ice Cream. And managed to 'forget' to tell anyone that it was in the freezer. Oops. And it looks like I should probably make another batch because I accidentally told a few people that I made it and it was good. Mr. Hedin looked at me like, "you made what?" Oh, did I forget to tell you and eat most of the container? It must have slipped my mind...

In the mean time:

Happy Friday

Hello! Happy Friday! I can't believe another week has passed! I can't believe I'm using so many exclamation points! We had a busy week and have a busy weekend coming up. The Huskies are playing football on Saturday (Go Dawgs!) then we are headed to Whidbey to make apple cider on our new apple press. I'll post more on that next week.

In the mean time,

:: The play room is under way. This week Mr. Hedin has been jack hammering out channels in the basement to run the plumbing for the bathroom. This 'before' looks positively livable compared to the war zone it looks like now.

:: It's Breast Cancer Awareness month. What are you doing to help find a cure? You can shop. I'm just saying...

:: I ate my way through a new cookbook. The sugar coma is unbelievable.

:: I also made ice cream from the Italian Prune tree next door. Not sure I'd recommend it. Last week's Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream was much better. I made a huge batch for our Halloween party!

Crafting Community with Splendid!

Bookalicious :: Sugar,Sugar

The most darling, sweet, lovely book arrived a few weeks ago and I am smitten. Sugar, Sugar by Kimberly Reiner and Jenna Sanz-Agero is one of the sweetest cookbooks I have seen in a long time - and I see A LOT of cookbooks.

Sugar, Sugar is almost 300 pages of sweet recipes - pies, cakes, cookies, bars, and even a few cocktails collected from around the globe. Each recipe comes with a story from the person who submitted the recipe telling a little story about the accompanying recipe. Most are heart warming. Some are a little sad. All of them make you want to try the recipe. Even for pie - and I do not make a good pie crust (yet...).

Some of the recipes come with a "Sugar Momma Tip" with helpful substitutions, ways to 'sass' up the recipe, and a few ideas for variations.

Sugar, Sugar is a perfect cookbook for the person who has every cookbook. It's also the perfect cookbook for someone who has no desert cookbooks - they won't need another one. I'm really glad it's Halloween season because I have an excuse to make so many batches of cookies over the next few weeks!

House Projects :: Basement Demo + Playroom

Right when you come down the stairs in our house you come into a "playroom." It was probably the 'rec room' in it's day. It has an awesome old fireplace but is otherwise unremarkable. It's existence is why they called the basement 'finished' when we bought it. Questionable at best because the floors are concrete and freezing and there is technically no heat vents into the basement at all.

But that will soon all be changed and this space will be amazing. We're keeping the fireplace - because I love it - and putting in radiant floor heating so the concrete floors aren't so numbing. I can't wait to have a place to send the kids to play too - one that gives me five minutes of quiet time.

The new space will be part playroom and part TV room. We want it to grow with the kids as they grow and easily evolve into a place where they can hang out as teenagers. We'll see...

I'll have some shelves built in that can hold toy bins now - and probably video games later. Do you still call them video games? Do they have a cooler name? Something to find out.

I don't think anything that I do will actually look like these images because I really can't find anything that has what I am envisioning. We are putting in a bar sink + fridge area with toy bins near by. And - of course - everything will be shades of white with a pop of color. I'm loving this combo right now:

How was your weekend? Ours was rainy. And felt even more rainy when I discovered that the finishes I want in the basement do not fit into our budget. Not even a little. We're trying to figure out where we can 'skimp' in order to have some of the more important things - like a really good washing machine. Do you know how much laundry we create?? One of the down sides of having so much space to finish is that we have SO MUCH SPACE to finish!

How was your week? We seemed to have a very crazy one around here. I'm not entirely sure why we did - but it was crazy. I'm working frantically to get Judson's birth announcements done and I just can't get a design I like. It's really maddening.

Halloween is in full swing at our house too. I'm off to the fabric store today to get tiger fabric for Lars - I'm not sure what we're doing for Pearl yet. Because she isn't the age to truly care, we've discussed Lions and Tigers and Bears because Lars really wants to be a tiger. We'll see. She'll either be a lion or Strawberry Shortcake. And then there's Jud.

At home, we are in full renovation mode including removing some of the duct work from the basement to be able to re-route it. That's code for 'our house is now cold.' We still have some heat coming in, but it's in weird rooms and it's an electric heater - so not that great. Don't worry, we aren't freezing. Just not exactly basking in a warm room. We'll get there.
